Swaziland High Court judge Mpendulo Simelane has ordered journalist Bheki Makhubu and human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko back to jail for seven days after an open court hearing in Swaziland’s capital Mbabane.
Makhubu and Maseko have been held at Sidwashini jail, just north of Mbabane, since March 18.
They were sent to jail on remand after a closed court hearing presided over by chief justice Michael Ramodibedi, who recently welcomed former court registrar Simelane as a high court judge — the judge currently hearing the case of Makhubu and Maseko.
Ramodibedi is currently facing impeachment proceedings in his home country Lesotho where he is that nation’s Court of Appeal president.
There was much local and international support for Makhubu and Maseko at this morning’s hearing.
The two are are facing contempt of court charges after writing articles questioning Swaziland’s judicial system.
The next hearing is set for Tuesday 1 April.
